GRID EXPERT FOR BLACKOUT COMMENT; SMART GRID INVESTMENT URGENTLY NEEDED

This week’s widespread blackout that wreaked havoc throughout the Southwest – leaving 1 million people sweltering in dangerously hot, record-breaking temperatures – reveals just how vulnerable our nation’s obsolete power grid is to just a single incident, according to Galvin Electricity Initiative executive director John Kelly. As founder of the National Energy Center for Sustainable Communities and the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, John is prepared to discuss the increasing threat of demand-related rolling outages, the real impact on public safety and the economy and the actions needed to prevent them from happening in the first place. The Initiative recently launched a national grid performance rating program as a way of recognizing microgrid prototypes across the country that have realized significant returns on investment in new technologies.

To request an interview with Galvin Electricity Initiative director John Kelly, please contact Gary Ritterstein at 202-248-5453 or gritterstein@vancomm.com.

The Galvin Electricity Initiative was launched by former Motorola CEO Robert W. Galvin to transform our electric power system into one that is reliable, efficient, secure, clean and meets the needs of 21st century consumers. In 2011, the Initiative continues to spark a migration toward a consumer-driven electric power system that is based on quality leadership. The goal is to promote grid modernization by identifying and promoting best practices in design and development, which place top priority on serving consumers and businesses with reliable, high-quality, clean power.
