Texas Smart Grid Reaches Agreement with National Rating Program on Consumer-Focused Performance

AUSTIN, TX — The Galvin Electricity Initiative and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) reached an agreement with Pecan Street Project to implement the Perfect Power Seal of Approval™ (PPSoA) performance standards. The memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for leveraging the Initiative’s research support, UL’s renowned technical expertise and Pecan Street Project’s real world consumer smart grid research and technology to help set the standard for consumer-focused performance.

"We are pleased to collaborate with the Galvin Electricity Initiative and Underwriters Laboratories to structure, test and perfect system integrations, pricing models, data collection and system deployment architectures that meet the Seal of Approval metrics."

The University of Texas at Austin-based smart grid research organization will provide research support and real-world implementations as part of the collaboration with the Galvin Electricity Initiative and UL. It has further committed to support the PPSoA technical specifications in its research trials of consumer home smart grid systems. The PPSoA technical specifications are based on input from mayors and other community-based stakeholders, including a number of smart grid pilot projects and other expert advisors. PPSoA is the first program to bring together these four key performance categories, which compliment ongoing efforts by forward-thinking regulators, utilities, generators, and entrepreneurs to develop and achieve consumer-focused outcomes. By focusing on consumer needs at the system design level, projects can maximize investment and consumer buy-in.

The Initiative has teamed up with UL, a highly respected safety certification organization to train and certify a team of evaluators to review and rate the grid project performance. Communities can use the project ratings to compare service providers, shape policy incentives and hold utilities accountable for providing access to more affordable, reliable, cleaner electricity. With more communities and states move toward restructuring, grid developers can use these ratings to better inform decision-making as entrepreneurs can develop applications that allow consumers to better manage their electricity use. Pecan Street Project Inc. is a smart grid and clean energy research and development organization headquartered at The University of Texas at Austin. Pecan Street Project began operations through seed funding from The University of Texas at Austin.
